Course Content
Since its invention, cinema as a transnational phenomenon has represented the constant transformation of languages, cultures, individual and collective identities. Languages, cultures, and identities, as well the national cinemas that represent them are not neatly contained by political boundaries, having been forged in the context of histories of nationalism, independence, ideological struggle, revolution, modernisation, postmodernism, gender and sexual revolutions, competing industries and changing audiences. This course will provide students with the opportunity to study a selection of Western European and Latin American cinemas in the context of these phenomena.
Participants are expected to read preparatory texts for each session as well as to have watched the films critically.
